If you live in Texas, now is the time to file for your homestead exemption.  The homestead exemption removes part of your home’s value from taxation, so the amount of taxes owed is lowered.  For example, if your home is appraised at $200,000 and you qualify for a $25,000 exemption, you will pay taxes on the home as if it were worth $175,000.  Each taxing authority has the option of offering different exemptions so check your county assessor’s office to find out the amount for which you may be entitled. Most exemptions must be filed by April 30, but do check your assessor’s office to verify your specific deadlines.
